The department is basically divided into five sections namely; Orthopaedic & Trauma Unit, Paediatric Unit, Spine Unit, and Arthroplasty & Oncology
We deliver specialized tertiary care to both adults and paediatric patients. Services provided include specialized burn care, correction of congenital defects such as cleft lip and palate; congenital hand anomalies, congenital and acquired vascular anomalies, management of soft tissue defects, cosmetic procedures and reconstructive procedures.
Training, Schools, Education, Research & Statistics (TSERS) formerly known as the Research, Education and Training (RET) department, was renamed in 2004 under Dr. G.T. Adebule to reflect its expanded role. The department is responsible for staff training and development, and oversees key educational institutions within the hospital, including the Residency Training Programme, College of Nursing Sciences and the Federal College of Orthopaedic Technology (FECOT).

The NHIA Clinic is conveniently located within the hospital and is dedicated to promoting the biopsychosocial well-being of its enrollees. It operates in line with NHIA policy goals—ensuring access to quality healthcare, maintaining high standards, and promoting service efficiency. The clinic offers a wide range of medical services in both in-patient and out-patient settings for enrollees and their dependants.
The Administration Department ensures the smooth operation and coordination of activities at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, aligning with the hospital’s vision and mission. It upholds professionalism, innovation, and cost-effectiveness while managing human and capital resources for sustainable development. The department oversees recruitment, training, motivation, and retention of skilled personnel. It also handles dispute resolution, promotes industrial harmony, implements federal policies, enforces discipline, and fosters peaceful coexistence among staff. Additionally, it supports capacity building and the professional growth of employees.
Established in 1976 to provide comprehensive diagnostic support across the hospital. The department comprises of six specialized units which are Haematology, Blood Transfusion , Chemical Pathology, Microbiology & Parasitology, Histopathology/Cytology & Mortuary, and Immunology.
Formerly known as the Laundry Department, the Linen Services Department adopted its new name in 1993 following approval based on a 1992 request by the Association of Launderers and Cleaners of Nigeria. The change reflects the integration of three units—Central Linen Store, Tailoring, and Laundry—all working together to ensure efficient linen and fabric service delivery to patients. The department plays a vital role in maintaining hygiene and comfort through coordinated linen management across the hospital.
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession focused on promoting health and managing injuries, diseases, and disabilities through therapeutic exercises and specialized equipment. It enhances quality of life by improving mobility and reducing pain from conditions such as musculoskeletal, neurological, and respiratory disorders. Care is tailored through detailed assessment and personalized treatment plans, including education, home exercises, and lifestyle advice.
The Health Records Department, formerly known as the Medical Records Department, is a vital unit under Clinical Services. Renamed in line with Decree 39 of 1989, it supports healthcare delivery by maintaining accurate patient information. Operating 24/7, the department is staffed by licensed professionals registered with the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria. It comprises eleven units that provide essential services to patients, hospital staff, management, government agencies, and NGOs.
The Radio-Diagnosis Department offers a wide range of diagnostic services including conventional radiography, theatre and ward radiography using C-arm image intensifiers, and various ultrasonography procedures. These include musculoskeletal, Doppler, echocardiography, abdominal, pelvic, trauma-related, and small parts scans (e.g., thyroid, testes), as well as image-guided procedures. ECG examinations are also conducted. The department supports professional development through intern radiographer training programmes.
Established in December 1945, the Prosthetics and Orthotics Department is a key part of the hospital’s rehabilitation team. It provides prostheses (artificial limbs) for upper and lower limb amputees and orthoses (assistive devices) for individuals with musculoskeletal impairments, supporting mobility and improving quality of life.
The Stores and Supplies Department was established at the inception of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, with the primary responsibility of efficiently receiving, storing, and distributing materials and items to various users. The department oversees a variety of specialized units, including: Medical Consumables Shop, Medical Appliances Shop, Prosthetic & Orthotics Store, Surgical Store, Dressing and Cleaning Store, Stationery Store, Catering/Dietetics Store, Energy Store (AGO and PMS), Medical Gases Store, Work & Services/Furniture/Unserviceable Items Store.
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department is the first point of contact for patients at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi. It plays a critical role in patient care, offering immediate resuscitation, treatment, or referral when necessary. Patients are assessed and directed to appropriate specialties. EMS operates with a commitment to SERVICOM principles, ensuring quality and compassionate service.
The Nursing Services Department, also known as the Nursing Division, has existed since the hospital's inception. Initially staffed by Nigerian Registered Nurse/Midwives and a few nurses from Lagos State and Island Maternity Hospitals, their primary responsibilities included wound dressing, medication administration, and rehabilitation—especially for injured soldiers. The department remains a vital part of patient care and recovery.
The Pharmacy Department is committed to delivering safe, effective, and affordable pharmaceutical care in line with global best practices. Staffed by experienced Pharmacists, Technicians, and Support personnel. The department ensures the availability of high-quality medications to support comprehensive healthcare delivery. Aligned with the hospital’s vision of excellence, the team is dedicated to providing every patient with professional and personalized service.
The Works & Services Department is responsible for maintaining hospital equipment and facilities, as well as providing project advice and supervision. The department consists of several sections/units, including: Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Civil/Building Engineering, Painting, Plumbing, and Carpentry. These units ensure the hospital's infrastructures and systems run smoothly to support patient care.
Established in 2011, the Procurement Department of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, was created in line with the Federal Government’s directive and the Public Procurement Act of 2007. It is responsible for coordinating and harmonizing all procurement activities within the hospital, ensuring transparency, accountability, and adherence to sound public procurement practices as part of good governance.
The Dietetics Department has been operational for many years and functioned alongside the Catering Department until catering was outsourced in 2013. It consists of two main sections: the Dietetics Clinic, which offers nutrition counseling, dietary advice, and food demonstrations for patients, and the Dietetics Kitchen, which provides therapeutic diets to aid patient recovery. The department operates year-round with dedicated dietitians and aides on shift, using essential clinical tools like weighing and food scales to monitor and support patient care.
The Internal Audit Department was established in line with Financial Regulations mandating every Self-Accounting Unit to maintain an internal audit function. It is responsible for the continuous review and evaluation of the hospital’s internal control systems. The department conducts independent appraisals of financial, accounting, and operational activities, providing constructive and protective insights to support effective management.
The Accounts & Finance Department at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting financial information to support informed decision-making. Headed by a qualified Chartered Accountant, the department ensures compliance with Financial Regulations and provides essential data to hospital management, the Federal Ministry of Health, and other relevant bodies. Its core objective is to deliver accurate financial insights for efficient hospital operations and public accountability.
The Information Technology Unit oversees the development, implementation, and support of IT systems and infrastructure within the hospital. Aligned with the hospital’s focus on service, teaching, and research, the unit leverages emerging technologies to enhance healthcare delivery. It also offers expert support and guidance to healthcare professionals and students, promoting information security, system efficiency, and the effective use of digital resources.
Occupational Therapy (OT) helps inpatients and outpatients regain independence in daily activities. The department operates daily clinics with sectional heads. Creating awareness about OT among healthcare professionals and ensuring holistic quality care.
We attend to patients and their families who have difficulties coping with their emotional, psychological, social and care problems arising from ill health and traumatic injuries. As an inter-disciplinary team player, Medical Social Workers collaborate with the medical team and community resources to provide holistic care for patients and their relations.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care provides anaesthetic services for all surgical and non-surgical procedures in the hospital. These include all orthopaedic procedures, trauma care and burns and plastic procedures. The department also oversees the management of the critically ill patients of the hospital in the Intensive Care Unit.
